Lake Tahoe Fishing
Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular fishing spots in the United States because of the variety of fish available in the lake and other waterways in the region. The fact that a large portion of the area is open to fishermen year round also helps to account for its popularity as a fishing hotspot.
That which draws most fishermen to any fishing spot is, of course, the kind of fish that can be caught. The Lake Tahoe fishing experience is a rich one indeed because of the many kinds of fish that are found in and around the lake itself. There are no less than six varieties of trout that are found in Lake Tahoe and its surrounding waterways, including Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Volcano Creek Golden Trout, Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, and Mackinaw or Lake Trout. Kokanee Salmon, a type of landlocked Salmon, is also found in the waters in and around Lake Tahoe.
Because it is so famous, Lake Tahoe itself is the first place anyone thinks of when Lake Tahoe fishing is discussed. Yet there are many other lakes and reservoirs in the Lake Tahoe area that are good fishing spots as well. Some of the more popular of these are Donner Lake, Caples Lake, Boca Reservoir, the Truckee River, and the Little Truckee River, but there are dozens of others that could be mentioned as well. Fishing is open in most of the Lakes year-round, although the streams and rivers are closed to fishermen at different points during the year to allow the fish to spawn. All of the Lake Tahoe tributaries are closed between October 1st and June 30th, and many of the lakes that are otherwise open will likewise be closed to fishing within 300 feet of the mouth of any river or stream.
There are many local fishing camps for Lake Tahoe fishing and a large number of companies offer boat charters to fishermen who are coming in to Lake Tahoe from another area of the world. Fishermen who have fished in the area will tell you to get to Lake Tahoe at least once in your life. Any expense incurred will be well worth the fishing experience and the possibility of seeing some of the most beautiful land in the United States.
