CALIFORNIA TROUT
LAKES Part Two "Low" Sierra Choices SLY/LOST
CREEK RESERVOIRS & LITTLE GRASS VALLEY LAKE These lovely isolated
reservoirs offer solid trout action, a batch of nice campsites and
decent camping at about 5,000 feet. The best spots to troll in Little
Grass Valley Lake run down the north side and up into the cove near
Black Rock. Bank fish right near camp at Peninsula Campground. Limited
public access at Lost Creek on the north side makes this lake a prime
choice for belly boaters and canoeists who don't mind snaking their
craft down the bank to this small reservoir. Sly Creek fishing off the
West Points and the north side bank at the inlet creek. Note: If you
like creek fishing, don't miss nearby local waters. Most visitors drive
to Marysville, take Highway 20 towards Grass Valley, turn north on E-21
past Collins Lake (good black bass action, fine campground, lots of
planted trout) to Challenge and follow the La Porte Road past La Porte.
Cartop boaters often take Barton Hill Road that winds down to Lost Creek
and Sly Creek Reservoirs from Gold Cup Lodge. Paved access and nice
ramps suit Little Grass Valley Lake to large RVs or trailer boats. ENGLEBRIGHT AND
BULLARDS BAR RESERVOIRS
Bullards Bar, either
from Highway 49 north of Grass Valley or from Marysville Road via
Highway 20 and E 21 from Marysville has solid brown and rainbow trout
action in the North Yuba Arm, but may be better known for its kokanee
that hit small spinners. Add lots of bass,
crappie and other panfish and good FREE campsites at Dark Day(bring your
own water) to our favorite boater's only sites at Garden and Frenchy
Point and you have a solid opening day choice. Rather crowded, but
productive action on the Middle and North Yuba Rivers isn't far either. Gold Country towns
like Nevada City and Grass Valley offer solid alternatives to fill the
rest of the day after limits.
